SPI stands for Stitches per Inch. Many yarns will list their gauge in either SPI or in stitches per 4 inches / 10 cm. To convert to the latter, multiply SPI by 4. For example, 5.5 SPI is the same as 22 stitches per 4 inches / 10 cm.
Please note that we've also received quite a bit of feedback on the yarn choices in the above list. Since several hundred people have already filled out the survey it's not possible to change it now. However, the feedback is important and we'll be sure to use it when classifying yarn for our published patterns.
