I'm so excited to finally be able to tell you all about Knotions!
As some of you know, I'm a lifelong knitter and have been blogging about knitting for the past 4 years at savannahchik.com.
For some time now, I've been considering starting a more "official" site. I've been torn because there are a few areas that I'd love to explore more -- discussions on fit and technique, illustrated instruction, pattern design, and previews of upcoming designs, yarns, and tools. So, in a fit of "I think I can", Knotions was born.
Knit Smarter
My aspiration for the magazine is not just to publish free patterns. Although there will be plenty of those, what will really thrill me is if Knotions helps you to achieve better fit, identify and fix pattern issues, select appropriate yarn, and use the best techniques. In short, I want Knotions to help you knit smarter.
The magazine will be published quarterly, but some articles and patterns will come out throughout the year. The site will be active, and not just something that gets updated a few times a year.
How else will Knotions be unique? Here are some of my plans for the site in the upcoming months:
Technology
-
Tags: Patterns and articles will have tags associated with them to allow searching across all issues. Want to find every cardi pattern? Patterns made with sport weight yarn? Articles on cast on methods? Tags will let you do it quickly.
-
Print-friendly versions of all patterns. Less time spent printing means more time spent knitting!
-
Site-wide search function. When tags aren't enough, you can do a full text search to find exactly what you want.
Patterns
-
Schematics: All patterns will include schematics and charts (when appropriate).
-
Sizes: All garments will list modeled size and suggested ease.
-
Tips for personalized fit: Select patterns will include modification suggestions.
-
Professional technical editing: What you knit should be both pretty and usable.
-
Sizing: I'll be encouraging designers to grade their patterns with a large range of sizes. I'm also exploring the option of publishing some larger-sizes-only patterns because proportions change as sizes go up. If you're a designer interested in submitting a larger-sizes-only pattern, please visit the submissions page for all the info you'll need.
-
Both US and metric measurements.
Schedule
Knoted -- the blog -- and articles will be updated throughout the year so be sure to subscribe to the
rss feed to stay updated with the most recent articles, free patterns and reviews.
We'll be doing in-depth year-long series on select topics. Our first topic is the top-down raglan. While the basics are straightforward, making a top-down raglan fit properly for a variety of body shapes is something that takes a little more effort and a little more math. Ever make a raglan that had a too-wide neck? Or, a raglan with an armhole depth that was too long? Look for the premiere article and first pattern in April.
The periodic magazine portion of Knotions will be following an earlier publication schedule so you'll have extra time to knit season-appropriate garments. Who wants to finish that wool hoodie in the summer?
The publication schedule can be found in submissions.
Designers
You have the option to submit a design proposal for review and comment before designing, knitting and writing the pattern. I know that it can be frustrating to go through the entire process only to be turned down.
What else? That's up to you. Go fill out the reader survey to let me know what you think.
